Obsessions from my room in Chicago
April 12, 2007
Hi Possums. I’ve just been out to a small private party in a condo in Chicago! There I was introduced to the nuances in Tequila. My host explained that there are many different Tequilas, all exhibiting different degrees of smokiness and colour. The taste was a shock to me at first because I generally don’t drink straight spirits. However, after the second or third sip I warmed to the brandy-like flavour, much to my host’s delight.
We sat around an open fire, which was heaven after the stormy, snowy day it has been in Chicago and listened to my host play his harmonica, accompanied by the guitar and a vocalist. Prior to the music starting, I asked him why he had so many harmonicas (he had about twelve, all in little buckled pouches lined up on his chair). These are for the different keys, he explained. He showed me that an harmonica in C can be played in the key of C, as its German inventors intended. But that the same harmonica can also be played in G, Chicago blues style! Wow, what a difference! The Blues way was soulful. I felt a shiver down my spine, and told him so. He was expecting it, and admitted that playing it that way affects him too.
It was amazing how much of his own expression went into creating the sound. As I watched him play I was struck by how singularly focused he was and how the sound seemed to emanate through his body like an expression of his feelings. I suddenly understood why women are prone to falling in love with musicians. My theory on this is that the allure of a man with such focus and concentration is in imagining it directed solely to you…
So here I am now in my hotel room at almost half past twelve. I’m a little relaxed but don’t feel like going to bed, so I have decided to give earthpal’s challenge a go. She tagged me and I think that means I need to keep up the post chain. This is what I will do and in the process tag Ms Melancholy and Charlotte.
So here goes, five things I am obsessed with:
1. Young men. I really didn’t appreciate young men when I was a young woman. But now I really do.
2. Blogging. Haven’t been blogging for long, but I’ve got the bug!
3. Exercise. I’m hyper and need it for stress relief. I’ll do anything, even if its repetative.
4. Nature. I love outdoors and need it to keep my soul alive.
5. Meaning. I love art and conversation for this reason. I love to ponder over meanings and link things and analyse stuff. It does drive some people bonkers, but it makes me appreciate those people, my friends, who engage with me on making it.

Hey Bindi.
Now that I’m reading what everyone else obsesses about, it’s bringing up other litle obsessions of my own that I hadn’t thought to mention or hadn’t even considered to be an obsession.
I can certainly relate to all your five.
The harmonica man sounds very intriguing.
Yes, I suppose it depends on how you define obsession.
I think anyone focused so fully on their art or sport is intriguing, don’t you?
There is something about musicians – or artists generally – that is special. The intensity is appealing.
Your obsessions seem most reasonable to me – most of them healthy too! The exercise one has got me lately – which is how I stay sane when I’m seeing a man who lives way far from me (I think I have a thing for older men … but then I’m 49. Oh and the blogging bug has me badly. I love meeting people from different parts of the world who share many of the same interests I do. It’s particularly good since I live in a smaller centre far from larger places.
Enjoy your day at the gallery tomorrow!
Hi Kate. Its great that you have made so many e-friends through your interests, in gardening etc.
Ah, a distance relationship. Has its challenges as well as benefits, I’d hazzard to guess.
And yes, thanks, looking forward to the gallery.
Young men – no; younger men – maybe…. I doubt that they can be interesting long-term if they’re under 45, because they run out of conversation after a while. I suppose that this just means that for me it’s the conversation that counts!
I am happy that it’s been snowing for you. I am trying to imagine a snowy city. I’ve seen real snow only twice in my life, the last time in 1970! It sounds romantic, but I suspect that it’s also cold.
And what’s happening at the conference itself?
Keep having a great time!
hi mirabella, how are your cats? This is also the first time I have seen real snow in a city. It has been cold, but I bought myself a new wool coat before I left Aus, and have been wearing it every day, and my old berret that I used to wear in the ’80s. Met an older French Canadian man yesterday in the ‘meet the publisher’ section of the conference, because of the berret. He stopped me to point out that the cover of his book had an abstract picture of a person in a berret and we talked for ages. So you have a point there on the limitations of young men,or at least the potential of older men. The harmonica player was also an older man.
The conference has been amazing. Next year its in New York, you should come!
Hi Bindi,
Great little post. I have had some great nights at university with guitars and Tequila. They usually ended rather hazy though.
Hi Tyger. Well, strangely enough, my host was trying to convince me that Tequila never gives you a hangover! Eventhough I didn’t buy it at the time, was fine the next morning! This morning I’m suffering after excess white wine last night. The moral of this story has to be: drink Tequila more often!
