Traveling with Children

August 29, 2007

Hello Possums. Traveling with children through Europe recently for six weeks was a wonderful experience. Children bring a unique perspective to travel in other countries. For example, a trip to the supermarket was never straight forward. There was always fun to be had and new things to find. In a supermarket in Italy my children discovered a display of five-kilogram jars of Nutella and couldn’t walk past it.

Wow! Look at this!

Wow! That’s huge!

Oh my god!

Can we buy it mum, can we?

Well, no! There’s no way you can eat that much Nutella in two weeks, and we can’t fit a jar that size in our suitcases.

Aw, but…

No way! Lets just get the small jar and I’ll take a photo.

And so here we have it. My children hamming it up for the photo: Emma indicating the ‘five’, Kathleen feigning awe and wonder, Rosie expressing disbelief (this is her classic ‘what the…’ expression) and Sally smiling as though she is in Nutella-heaven.

Wow that is pretty huge! Great family pic too!

  2. We’d need one bigger! The children *love* Nutella.

That is amazing – what a great photo!!

  4. Hi Kit, thanks. Only a parent would appreciate the magnitude of this.

Hi miss l. Yes, we do go through a fair bit of Nutella here too, but that size is just wild!

Hi Jules, thank you. Amazing is what we thought too. Fancy taking photos of Nutella jars on an Italian summer holiday!

Now my eldest daughter would think she was in heaven if she saw that jar! Talk about chocolate heaven!

    “Are we there yet?”

They don’t seem to grow out of Nutella do they. I was checking out at the local supermarket here when the checkout chick, a young woman of maybe twenty, picked up my Nutella jar and said, Oh Nutella! I love this stuff. Whenever my mum buys it my sister and I spread it on Saladas and eat the whole jar in one day.

I saw an article in the Philadelphia Inquirer about the 5 kilo jar. I did a search and came across your blog. Nutella is the comfort food that everyone must keep in their cubbard!

  8. Hi Maurizio and welcome!

There is a place for Nutella in every kitchen cupbord, I agree. Last time I bought a jar here at home, the twenty-something ‘check-out chick’ struck up a conversation with me. ‘Oh Nutella, my sister and I love it. Whenever my mum buys a jar, we sit there eating it on Saladas until its all gone!’.
